Who We Are
We are Africans in Japan
The African Association of Miyagi (AFAM) is a dynamic, community-driven organization founded in 2002 to foster meaningful connections between Africans living in Japan and the local Japanese community. As the only officially recognized African association in Miyagi Prefecture, AFAM serves as a unifying platform for Africans, Caribbeans, and all people of African descent residing in the Tohoku region.
Rooted in the values of cultural pride, inclusivity, and global citizenship, AFAM works to promote African heritage, support international students, and contribute to the internationalization of Japan through intercultural exchange, public engagement, and educational collaboration.
Through vibrant cultural performances, community service, and public events, we celebrate Africa’s rich diversity and create spaces where African and Japanese communities can learn from one another. As we expand across Tohoku, we remain committed to building a strong, visible, and impactful African diaspora presence that inspires mutual understanding and shared progress.

” Bridging Cultures, Building Futures”
Expo International Exchange Program
This initiative forms a key part of the Expo International Exchange Program, implemented by the Japanese Cabinet Secretariat from fiscal year 2024 to 2025. In alignment with the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, the program seeks to create sustained international engagement between local communities in Japan and participants from Expo countries. Through this framework, the program fosters mutual understanding, promotes cultural enrichment, and addresses regional development challenges.
The collaboration between Rifu Town and the African Association of Miyagi (AFAM) exemplifies AFAM’s dedication to facilitating meaningful cross-cultural connections. AFAM plays a central role in coordinating the exchange, ensuring seamless communication, cultural sensitivity, and impactful engagement. By bridging communities across continents, AFAM reinforces its commitment to building lasting relationships that enrich both African and Japanese participants, empowering future leaders, and fostering a shared vision for global understanding.
